ジェローム・カーン（1885-1945） |
ユダヤ系アメリカ人。
１８８５年、ニューヨーク生まれ。
裕福なドイツ系ユダヤ人の父親は、息子にビジネスの世界に進むことを望んだが、カーンはティンパン・アレーで楽譜販売の仕事をしながら、作曲家としての活動を始めた。
それまでアメリカで上演されていたミュージカルが、ヨーロッパから持ち込まれたレヴューやオペレッタの形式であったのに対し、「ショウボート」は、芸能一家の生活を縦軸に、正面から人種差別の問題をとりあげ、まったく新しい演劇形態を試みた舞台だった。
現在のブロードウェイ・ミュージカルは、この「ショウボート」の上演から始まった。

オスカー・ハマースタイン・2世(1895-1960) |
祖父はブロードウェイのプロデューサー、父は劇場支配人という環境に育つ。法律家を目指していたが芸能界にあこがれ、1920年代はJerome
KernやSigmund Rombergと組んで、ブロードウェイの台本作家、作詩家として活躍 。30年代はあまりパッとしなかったが、1943年、Richard
Rodgersと共に「Oklahoma」を書き成功。以来ロジャースs & ハマースタインのコンビは、ハマースタインが亡くなる年（1960年）の前年まで続き、「Sound
Of Music」はこのコンビの最後の仕事となる。
