ティンパン・アレーで Albert Von Tilzer, Con Conrad, Harold Arlen等と共に多くの歌詞を作った。1925年から1929年頃、 Ray Henderson やBuddy De Sylva と共同でブロードウェー・ショーの為の曲を作った。

黒人音楽に心を惹かれてクラリネットに夢中になり、やがてバンドを編成した白人少年がシカゴに進出するまでを描いた作品。
