シラキューズ大学で本格的にピアノと声楽を学び、ニューヨークのティンパンアレイで、ピアニストとして働きながら、1933年にHarold Arlen(ハロルド・アレン ) の弟のJerry Arlen(ジェリー・アーレン)と組んで作曲を始め、ハロルドがコットン・クラブをやめるときに後任として推薦もらい、その仕事が初仕事となった。1939年から1940年の1年間で、 "So Help Me" "Darn That Dream"など60曲を出版する。また同年より作詞家のJohnny Burke(ジョニー・バーク)と組んでハリウッドに進出し、ミュージカル映画の曲を提供し、特に "Swinging on a Star" (1944)が大ヒットする。1953年 "Here's That Rainy Day" を発表した後、Johnny Burke(ジョニー・バーク)は健康を害し、このコンビでの作品はうまれていない。その後、 Sammy Cahn(サミー・カーン) とコンビを組み、フランク・シナトラの "All The Way"など次々とヒット曲を量産した。

アメリカ合衆国の作詞家。ニューヨーク州ニューヨーク・シティ出身。
オスカーを４度受賞し（ノミネーションも２２回）、フランク・シナトラのためにも多くの曲を提供した。邦画「ハッピーフライト」（2008年11月15日に公開された日本映画。監督は矢口史靖）で主題歌に使われたフランク・シナトラが歌うCome Fly With MeはSammy Cahnは、Sammy Cahn代表曲。

ジャズ・ギタリストのSteve Khan（スティーヴ・カーン）は息子。
