1899年4月米国ワシントンDC生まれ、74年5月24日死去。米国の20世紀を代表するオーケストラ・リーダー／作曲家／ピアニスト。20年代の後半にジャズ・クラブ“コットン・クラブ”の専属となり、ハーレム・ルネッサンスを象徴する活躍をみせる。作編曲家ビリー・エクスタイン、テナー・サックスのベン・ウェブスターらを迎えた40年代の初めにオーケストラは絶頂期を迎えた。生涯に残した楽曲は2,000曲以上といわれる。

オハイオ州、デイトンに生まれる。
エリントン楽団のアレンジャー、作曲家、ピアニスト、作詞家。
1938年、23歳の時「デューク・エリントン楽団」にアレンジャーとして加入。始めはエリントンの作る曲に詩を書くという条件で入団したが、すぐに曲を書き始め、以降、亡くなる67年まで、エリントンの分身的存在として作編曲に多大なる献身を示した。1967年、癌のため51歳の若さでこの世を去る。
代表作は「Take the A Train」「Lush Life」「Lotus Blossom」などの名曲を残した。
小柄でおとなしいビリー・ストレイホーンは、エリントン楽団では、「Swee' Pea (ポパイにでてくるおませな赤ん坊のスウィピー)」と呼ばれていた。

アメリカ合衆国メリーランド州ボルティモアで生まれる。
Vernon DukeやTed Fetterと共に1940年初演されたミュージカル『Cabin in the Sky』や、１９４７年製作された映画『Dreams That Money Can Buy』やオペラ、ミュージカルへの歌詞を供給した。
