1923年にコルネット奏者のビックス・バイダーベック（Bix Beiderbecke）と共演し、1925年にベン・ポラック楽団（the Ben Pollack Orchestra）に参加。1928年には本拠地をニューヨークへ移し、翌1929年には楽団から離れてソロ活動を始める。
1932年には自ら楽団を結成し、NBCラジオに定期的に出演。1935年のロサンゼルスの有名なダンスホールであるパロマーボールルーム（Palomar Ballroom）での大成功をきっかけに全米にわたる人気を獲得し、1938年にはカーネギー・ホールで最初のジャズコンサートを行うまでに至りスウィングの王様（King of Swing）の名声をほしいままにする。

the Chick Webb band（黒人の名スイング・バンド、チック・ウェップ楽団）のテナー奏者エドガー・サンプソンが1934年作曲して演奏した曲だが、ベニー・グッドマンの演奏のほうがヒットしてしまったので、グッドマンも作者にクレジットされることになったといういきさつがある。
後年、彼はこの曲では誰のプレイが一番好きか…と聞かれ、
「音楽的にはチック・ウェッブ楽団、経済的にはベニー・グッドマン楽団(Musically, I prefer Chick’s. Financially, I prefer Benny’s")」と皮肉めいて答えたそうだ。
Some years later composer Sampson was asked what his favorite version of “Don’t Be That Way” was. His response was “musically, I prefer Chick’s. Financially, I prefer Benny’s!”
