「レディ・デイ」の呼称で知られる。サラ・ヴォーンやエラ・フィッツジェラルドと並んで、女性ジャズ・ヴォーカリスト御三家の1人に数えられる[1]。人種差別や、麻薬・アルコール依存症との闘いなど壮絶な人生を送った彼女は、多くの人々を魅了したその声も晩年にはかれ、音域も極端に狭くなっていた。しかし、なお情感豊かな唄声は他に並ぶ者がないほどの高い評価を与えられ、ジャニス・ジョプリンをはじめとする多くのミュージシャンに影響を与えた。
彼女の生涯に於いて代表的なレパートリーであったStrange Fruit （奇妙な果実） やGod Bless' the Child （神よめぐみを）、I Love You, Porgy 、Fine and Mellow は、後年、多くのミュージシャンに取り上げられるジャズ・ヴォーカルの古典となった。
