コール・ポーター(1891-1964)


アメリカ・インディアナ州生まれ。裕福な家庭に育ち、6歳からピアノとバイオリンを学び、10歳で初めて作曲をする。
その後ハーバード大学で法律を学ぶ。が、音楽の道を捨てがたく、NYの社交界の一員となり、ブロードウェイのショーを手がけるが失敗、1917年フランスへ。
そこでリンダと出会い、音楽の才能を開花させ栄光を手にすることとなる。
ミュージカルや映画音楽を担当し、洗練された作詞・作曲で次々とヒット作を生み出した。
音楽を担当した代表作は「Kiss Me Kate」「Anything Goes」（ミュージカル）、「上流社会」「昼も夜も」（映画）など。
約870曲にも及ぶ彼の作品は、現代のミュージシャンにも愛され、数多くのカバーやCM、TVで使用されている。
妻リンダが死去した後は、64年に生涯を終えるまで作曲をすることはなかった。

Miss Otis Regrets (She's Unable To Lunch Today) は、
コール・ポーターの作品の中で映画やミュージカルのために作ったものでは無い唯一のものだといわれている。
ある社交界の集まりで同席した友人の俳優モンティ・ウーリーと二人で即興でフレーズをつなげてつくった曲で、♪今日はミス・オーティスは昼食にご一緒できないことを残念がっております。奥様・・・・と歌った。これが評判になって、その後、コール・ポーターの伝記映画『Night and Day(1946)』でモンティ・ウーリーが本人自身の役で、執事の格好をしてこの時につくったうたを歌っているシーンを演じている・・・そうだ。
