15歳でドラマーとして音楽界に入り、その後ピアニストに転向。第一次世界大戦で海軍に従事した後、作曲家なり多くの映画の主題歌を残す。
アカデミー賞は3回受賞

映画・Hello Frisco, Hello (1943)の♪You'll Never Know
映画・The Harvey Girls (1946)の♪On the Atchison, Topeka and the Santa Fe

アメリカの作曲家兼作詞家。
ワルシャワで生まれ、幼少時にニューヨークシティーに移った。
1920年代および1930年代、ミュージカル俳優としてボードビルに出ていたが、作詞作曲の才能を生かし、ソングライターとなる。1940年代にハリー・ウォーレンとは、度々組んで仕事をした。
映画に使用されたゴードンの楽曲は、100を超え、しかも有名歌手の持ち歌が多いので、アメリカでは今でも絶大な人気を誇るソングライターなのだが、なぜか日本ではそれほどの知名度がないようだ。
