若い頃から作曲をはじめ、その後ブロードウェイミュージカルの音楽、映画音楽の曲を提供するようになった。。

Sentimental Journeyは、
第二次大戦の終了前年の1944年に発表された曲。
翌年1945年にLes Brown and His Band of Renownで属歌手だったドリス・デイをフューチャーしてヒットした。
また、第二次世界大戦の終わりと一致し、Sentimental Journeyは多くの退役軍人の郷愁を誘ったことも、ヒットした大きな要因といわれている。
