ジョージ・ガーシュイン（1898-1937） |
アメリカの作曲家。
ロシア・ユダヤ系の移民の息子として、 1898年9月26日ニューヨークで生まれた。ポピュラー音楽・クラシック音楽の両面で活躍し、「アメリカ音楽」を作り上げた作曲家として知られる。通称『完璧な音楽家』。
1937年7月11日、脳腫瘍のため、ハリウッドにて逝去。 10代の終わりからポピュラーソングの作曲を始め、作詞を手掛ける兄のアイラ・ガーシュイン (Ira Gershwin) と組んで、数々のヒットミュージカルを作曲した。1935年初演のフォーク・オペラ『ポーギーとベス』(Porgy and Bess )は大成功をおさめ、アメリカ音楽の古典となっている。劇中で歌われる「サマータイム」はポピュラーソングのスタンダードナンバーとして広く親しまれている。

アメリカの作詞家。
ロシア系ユダヤ人。両親ははじめ兄のアイラにピアノを習わせようとしましたが、よくあるケースですが弟がメキメキ上手になりお株を奪ってしまったのです。兄は沢山の作詞をし、弟が曲を書きました。兄弟の共作多数。1937年、弟ジョージが38歳の若さで他界した後、一時仕事から身を引くが、その後また復帰し名作を残した。

1927年に初演されたミュージカルStrike Up the Band で使われた曲。
1940年には、 Judy GarlandとMickey Rooney主演のミュージカル映画化（同名Strike Up the Band ）でされた。
