ジェローム・カーン（1885-1945）

ユダヤ系アメリカ人。
１８８５年、ニューヨーク生まれ。
裕福なドイツ系ユダヤ人の父親は、息子にビジネスの世界に進むことを望んだが、カーンはティンパン・アレーで楽譜販売の仕事をしながら、作曲家としての活動を始めた。
それまでアメリカで上演されていたミュージカルが、ヨーロッパから持ち込まれたレヴューやオペレッタの形式であったのに対し、「ショウボート」は、芸能一家の生活を縦軸に、正面から人種差別の問題をとりあげ、まったく新しい演劇形態を試みた舞台だった。
現在のブロードウェイ・ミュージカルは、この「ショウボート」の上演から始まった。

アメリカ、ニュージャージー州生。作詞家。
父はボードヴィルスターのルウ・フィールズ、二人の兄はプロデューサーと脚本家という、ショービズ一家。
「The Way You Look Tonight」は、
ダンサーフレッド・アステアの出演映画 Swing Time （邦題「有頂天時代」）（1936）の中で歌われた曲。アカデミー賞歌曲賞を受賞している。
